Families in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman choose British boarding schools for the route to leading universities, for the breadth of sport, music and activities, and for the independence that boarding builds. This guide covers applying from the Gulf, finding a place at short notice, faith provision and visas.
Why Gulf families choose UK boarding
- A strong route to UK and international universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and medicine.
- Small classes, academic stretch and the A level or IB Diploma in the sixth form.
- Pastoral care, independence and a wide range of activities that day schools rarely match.
Many families already know the British curriculum from international schools in the Gulf, which makes the academic transition straightforward.
Places at short notice
Plans sometimes change quickly. Many independent schools have places in some year groups during the year, particularly in Years 7 to 10 and at the start of sixth form. Through British School Clearing we contact registrars directly, identify suitable places and manage introductions, so your child can start as soon as possible.
Faith, food and family life
Many UK boarding schools provide halal food, a space for prayer and adjusted mealtimes during Ramadan, and some offer Arabic at GCSE or A level. Provision varies between schools, so we confirm the details with each school on your shortlist. The UK also has well-regarded girls’ and boys’ schools, and many co-educational schools have single-sex boarding houses.
Visits, interviews and visas
- Visiting schools: nationals of the Gulf states need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK, for example for school tours and interviews. It costs £20 and lasts for two years, or until the passport expires if sooner. Residents of the Gulf who are not Gulf nationals may need a visitor visa instead.
- Studying: to board at a UK school your child needs a Child Student visa, sponsored by the school. The fee is £558, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year. Applicants usually give fingerprints and a photo at a VFS Global visa application centre.
Guardianship
Almost all boarding schools require a UK guardian for pupils whose parents live overseas. WBS Guardians is AEGIS accredited. We look after your child at exeats and half terms, attend school events and keep you closely informed.
Costs
The average full boarding fee was £14,980 a term in January 2026 before VAT, and 20% VAT applies. See our fees guide.
